Rai

Thailand has its own unit of measure regarding land area as the metric system is primarily used for buildings and not land. More often than not, a potential purchaser would come across terms such as “Rai” and “ Talang Wah”. These two are the most commonly used measures in determining land area. A Rai measures approximately 16,000 square meters or .16 hectare. Moreover, land prices are usually pegged on a per Rai basis such that knowing its correct measurement would prevent any buyer from being overcharged. Furthermore, a Rai is the maximum land area an individual foreigner may own when he or she is exempted from the prohibition regarding foreign land ownership in the country.
